Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia committee to include monographs of 100 single drugs for sixth edition

The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia Committee is in the process of finalising monographs of 100 single drugs to be included in the sixth edition of the Pharmacopoeia which is expected to be published soon said the sources in the Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha.

The committee engaged in the process of setting standards in the Indian medicine of Ayurveda.  It has already published 418 monographs on single drugs in five volumes. The third part of the Ayurvedic Formulary of India consisting of 500 formulations is also in the draft stage. The first edition carried 414 formulations and the second included 191 formulations so far.

The first volume of Pharmacopoeia which was published in 1990 had 78 monographs while the second in 1999 had 80. The number went to 100 in the third edition in 2001. The committee added another 68 monographs in the 2004 edition and 92 in 2006 volume.

Laboratories/institution, having good infrastructure and scientific manpower are engaged in development of the Pharmacopoeial standards. These institutions are assigning to develop Pharmacopoeial standards on 5-10 ASU drugs per year under one project with Standard Operative Procedure (SOP) and Shelf Life Studies. There are more than 16 laboratories are engaged on the studies related to development of SOP, Pharmacopoeial Standard and Shelf life studies while one laboratory is into the studies on the effect of Gamma radiation on microbial load of plants drugs.
