Minister of State for Labour Mr Oscar Fernandes has said that the government is trying to give medical cover to 90% of workers in the unorganized sector.

Mr Oscar Fernandes was speaking at the renovation function of the model hospital of the Employees State Insurance Scheme at Andheri, Mumbai. Replying to a request from Maharashtra Chief Minister Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh who was also present at the function that the Centre should make adequate provisions in the law for helping workers from unorganised sector in getting medical help, he said this. Mr Fernandez added, workers from the organised sector, which constitute a minor portion of the country’s workforce, are currently covered under various governmental schemes like the Centre's Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) and the Employees State Insurance Scheme (ESIS). The hospital when complete will be of help to over one crore employees and their family members.
