A daylong sensitizations programme by Manipur Health Mission, an NGO for medical practitioners, medicine store owners and medical representatives recommended setting up of a drug testing laboratory in Manipur.
The absence of a drug-testing laboratory in the state came in the way of prescribing quality medicines. The state government was urged to set up one such laboratory as soon as possible. Another resolution said if any drug company wanted to market their products, it should first get prior permission from the medical directorate.
The company should also inform the Manipur Chemists and Druggists Association well in advance about their decision. The recommendation also appealed to doctors to prescribe drugs that are certified by International Standard Organisation and relevant institutes.
The unfair means that health officials often resort to were also discussed at the programme. The RIMS officials said the medicine storeowners often sell “substitute drugs” to customers.
The doctors have established a habit of prescribing new drugs after getting benefits from medical representatives, which should be shunned.
