The Institute for OneWorld Health, a US-based non-profit pharmaceutical company which develops drugs for infectious diseases in the developing world has formed a Strategic Advisory Board to support the iOWH Diarrhoeal Disease Program (DDP).
Each year more than two million children in developing countries succumb to diarrhoea caused by bacterial, parasitic, and viral pathogens. The Institute is assembling a portfolio of product candidates to address various aspects of diarrhoeal diseases, with a special focus on the needs of infants and young children. In this connection, it has chalked out a five year strategic plan on its expansion of the diarrhoeal disease portfolio and programmes.
Dr David A Sack, MD, has been appointed the Chair of iOWH's DDP Strategic Advisory Board. He is recognized globally for his research on diarrhoeal diseases.
OneWorld Health's strategic and scientific advisors are academic and industry leaders in science, technology and medicine. The representatives include Dr Shinjini Bhatnagar, senior grade scientist, Department of Paediatrics, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India, Prof. Zulfiqar Bhutta, Professor of Paediatrics & Neonatology, Aga Khan University, Pakistan, Prof. Mark Donowitz, Professor of Medicine & Physiology, Johns Hopkins University, United States, Dr Olivier Fontaine, WHO director of Diarrhoeal Diseases, Geneva, Switzerland, Dr G Balakrish Nair, director, National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases, Calcutta, India and Prof. Ann-Mari Svennerholm, Division of Medicine & Microbiology, University of Goteborg, Sweden.
The members of OneWorld Health's Diarrhoeal Disease Programme Strategic Advisory Board will be as advisors for OneWorld Health's initiative focused on the development of new drugs and therapeutic interventions to combat diarrhoeal diseases which is a leading cause of death of children under five years of age worldwide.
